Why is a newly indexed document missing from search?

A write can succeed before a search sees it. Refresh is the step that makes recent indexing changes visible to searches.

This gap explains why immediately searching after saving can be surprising. A real-time GET by document ID can already retrieve it while a search still uses the earlier view.

## If the next search must see the write

In Kibana Dev Tools, for an existing index with a suitable mapping:

Wait for this request to finish before issuing the search. `wait_for` waits for a refresh that exposes this operation; it does not normally force an immediate refresh for each write. The search must still target the correct index and match the document.

## If a short delay is acceptable

Use the normal refresh cycle. Forcing a refresh after every individual write adds work. Batch related writes when possible and measure freshness requirements rather than assuming one delay applies to every deployment. Refresh controls search visibility; it is not a backup mechanism.
