A long-term technical vision is a compelling picture of where the technology is going over multiple years and why, that guides today's decisions without dictating every detail. It is directional, not a precise prediction.
How to think about it
A STRONG TECHNICAL VISION
- Anchored in where the business and market are heading
- Describes the capabilities/architecture you aspire to
- Is inspiring and memorable (people can repeat it)
- Guides trade-offs today (does this move us toward it?)
- Stays flexible on the how; firm on the direction
The vision should be stable enough to align people yet adaptable as technology and the market evolve.
