Major technology investments are capital-allocation decisions and should be evaluated like them: weighing expected return, risk, strategic fit, and opportunity cost. The discipline is choosing the few bets worth making among many possible ones.
A decision framework
FOR EACH MAJOR INVESTMENT, ASK:
- Strategic fit: does it advance the strategy & vision?
- Return: what value (revenue, cost, risk reduction) and when?
- Cost & risk: full cost, execution risk, reversibility
- Opportunity cost: what we give up by choosing this
- Timing: is now the right moment?
Favor where possible, and stage large irreversible ones to reduce risk.
