What are BullMQ’s pros and cons, and when should you use it?

BullMQ is a Redis-backed job queue for Node.js. To decide whether it fits, start with **work that can finish after the HTTP response and must be tracked or retried**.

Consider a large report. Generating it inside the request can keep the user waiting until the request times out. A queue lets the application accept the work, return a job ID and process it separately.

The producer submits the job; the worker performs it. The user checks progress and downloads the saved report when it is ready.

The report still takes processing time. The improvement is that its lifetime no longer depends on keeping one HTTP request open, and workers can be managed separately from API servers.

## 2. Match the benefits to the requirement

For the report, these features avoid writing your own job-state and retry machinery. They also provide status information for progress and failure investigation. More workers are useful only while they improve completion time without overwhelming dependencies.

## 3. Understand the main correctness tradeoff

A worker can save the report and crash before marking the job complete. A retry may then repeat the work. The same pattern is more serious for actions such as charging money or sending a notification.

Use a stable business identity for the requested work. Make repeating that identity reuse or safely replace the intended result instead of producing another business effect. This is idempotency. If saving a database record must also create a job, consider the gap between those writes. An outbox records the instruction in the same transaction as the business record; a publisher later delivers it to the queue. Delivery may repeat, so the worker still needs idempotency.

## 4. Include Redis and worker operations in the cost

Redis is storing pending work, so its persistence, memory policy and recovery plan matter. Configure a noeviction policy for the queue: silently removing keys to free memory is unsuitable for jobs that must remain available. Put large report files in suitable storage and pass references in jobs. Define how long completed and failed job records are retained so Redis usage stays controlled.

## 5. Make a conditional recommendation

- Choose BullMQ when the Node.js application needs observable background work, retries and separately scalable workers, and the team can operate Redis reliably.
- Keep a trivial local action simple when it does not need durable tracking or independent execution.
- Evaluate a durable event log when the main requirement is long-term replay by several independent consumers rather than completing queued tasks.

For the report example, test a failed dependency, a worker crash after output is saved, and recovery after an outage. Confirm that the user sees a trustworthy status and that retrying does not create conflicting outputs.

**Remember:** BullMQ provides job coordination. The application provides business correctness, and the team remains responsible for operating the queue.
