How does EventEmitter differ from a job queue in Node.js?

Choose between EventEmitter and a job queue by asking **where the work must run and what happens if the process stops**.

EventEmitter notifies listeners inside one Node.js process. A durable queue stores work for later processing by workers. Both separate responsibilities, but their failure behavior is different.

## 1. Follow a local notification

Suppose a component finishes initialization and wants other components in the same process to react. EventEmitter is a natural fit: register listeners, then emit the event.

Node.js invokes registered listeners synchronously in registration order. The event itself is not stored for listeners that register later, and unfinished work does not survive a process crash. [Node.js Events](https://nodejs.org/api/events.html).

This works when the notification is local and can be lost or reconstructed. It becomes insufficient when the business expects the work to survive the sender.

## 2. Understand what an async listener changes

An async listener may begin asynchronous work, but emit does not wait for its returned promise. Invocation order is therefore not necessarily completion order.

CPU-heavy synchronous code inside that listener still delays the process. Deliberately handle thrown errors and rejected promises; captureRejections can route rejections to error handling, but does not persist or retry the task.

Adding async changes how the listener performs work. It does not turn an in-memory event into a durable queue.

## 3. Follow a queued task

Now suppose saving an order must eventually generate an invoice. A queue provides a place to keep the instruction while workers are unavailable or busy.

The producer submits a job; a worker processes an attempt and records the result. Workers can be deployed and scaled separately from the API. Durability still depends on the queue's storage and configuration.

In a typical competing-worker queue, one worker handles each attempt. That differs from broadcasting an event to every EventEmitter listener. If several independent subscribers each need the event, choose or configure a delivery model that supports that requirement.

## 4. Check the gap between saving and enqueueing

With EventEmitter, a crash after saving the order but before emitting can lose the invoice instruction. A durable queue protects a job after accepting it, but does not automatically protect the earlier gap between the database commit and submission.

An outbox closes that gap by storing the order and its instruction in the same database transaction. A publisher reads the outbox and sends the job later.

Delivery can repeat if the publisher loses confirmation. Give invoice creation a stable business key and a uniqueness constraint or other idempotent implementation. Repeating an attempt should not create a second invoice. [Idempotent jobs](https://docs.bullmq.io/patterns/idempotent-jobs).

## 5. Compare the options against the actual need

For the initialization example, I would use EventEmitter. For invoice generation that must recover from failure, I would use a durable queue and address the database handoff and duplicate attempts.

Test by stopping the process at the important boundaries: before submission, after acceptance and after the business effect. The result should match the guarantee the user expects.

**Remember:** local notification → EventEmitter; recoverable background work → durable queue. For critical effects, also design the handoff and idempotency.
