A Scrum Master is a servant-leader and coach accountable for the Scrum Team's effectiveness. They do not manage people or assign tasks; they help the team get great at Scrum and remove what slows it down. The role serves three audiences: the team, the Product Owner, and the wider organization.
Where the time goes
SERVE THE TEAM coach self-management, facilitate events,
protect from distractions, remove impediments
SERVE THE PO help with backlog ordering, refinement,
and clear goal-setting
SERVE THE ORG coach leaders on Agile, remove cross-team
blockers, drive adoption
Concrete example
A team keeps getting pulled into ad-hoc support tickets mid-Sprint. The Scrum Master negotiates a separate support rotation with the manager, protecting the Sprint Goal, and coaches the team to say no to drive-by requests.
