This is core to mid/senior work: getting buy-in through credibility, data, and relationships rather than a title. Show that you persuaded, didn't command.
How to approach it
text
1. Understand others' incentives before pitching
2. Lead with evidence (a prototype, data, a small win)
3. Build allies one conversation at a time
4. Let people co-own the idea
Worked example
text
S: Our team kept hitting flaky tests but no one owned fixing them.
T: I had no authority to assign anyone, but I wanted CI made reliable.
A: I quantified the cost (hours lost per week), fixed the three worst tests
myself as proof, and showed the before/after to the team and lead. I asked
two peers to adopt the pattern on their areas.
R: The team agreed to a "no flaky tests" norm; CI failures dropped by half.
