As a senior engineer, much of your impact comes through influencing decisions and driving change — building consensus, making the case for ideas, and bringing people along. This requires more than being technically right; it requires persuasion, communication, and understanding people.
Influence beyond authority
Senior engineers often lack formal authority but need to drive technical decisions:
→ INFLUENCE through expertise, trust, reasoning, and relationships (not commands)
→ being RIGHT isn't enough → you must PERSUADE and bring people along
→ "How do I get the team/org to adopt this / make this decision?"
→ influence is a key senior skill (impact through others, not just your own work).
