Both roles are abbreviated "PM," but they answer different questions. Product management owns what to build and why. Project management owns how to deliver it and when. One is about choosing the right destination; the other is about getting there efficiently.

Launching a referral program: the product manager decides referrals are worth building (vs. other ideas) and defines what success looks like. The project manager turns that into a dated plan across engineering, legal, and marketing, and drives it to launch.
In small teams one person does both. On large initiatives they're distinct and work as a pair — product sets direction, project drives execution. Conflict usually comes from blurred ownership of priorities vs. timeline.
Confusing the two leads to gaps: a team can deliver flawlessly (great project management) the wrong feature (poor product management), or pick a brilliant idea that never ships on time.
Knowing the distinction helps you direct questions to the right person and understand who owns which decision.
