## Make it real

- **Set outcome-based goals.** "Cut checkout latency to under 1s" beats "do the latency project."
- **Say no out loud.** Alignment is mostly about what you *decline*.
- **Repeat the why** constantly — context decays and must be refreshed.
- **Close the loop:** show the team the impact their work had on the metric.

## Pitfalls

- **Output goals masquerading as outcomes** ("ship 10 features").
- **OKRs set once and never revisited.**
- **Vanity metrics** that look good but don't move the business.
- **Engineers who can't say why their work matters** — a sign alignment failed.

## Why it matters

Aligned teams make better local decisions because they understand the goal; they self-prioritize instead of waiting to be told.
